Former Wallabies hooker Brendan Cannon's 16-month-old is in a stable but critical condition after Cannon accidentally ran over him on the driveway of their Brisbane home.
On Saturday Cannon accidentally reversed his four-wheel drive over his son which fractured both his legs and caused internal injuries to the toddler.
Samuel had been playing with his mother in the garden and he ran over to the car to see his siblings Joseph, five, and Phoebe, three, get into the vehicle.
The toddler is now in the Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane and his condition is said to be critical but stable
"We know he is in the best place possible to recover," Mr and Mrs Cannon said in a statement quoted by AAP on Sunday.
"We've been overwhelmed by the support and actions of the doctors and nurses at the Royal Children's Hospital, I cannot praise them enough.
"Given the circumstances, this is obviously an extremely trying time for our family."
"We would like to thank and acknowledge the support and well wishes we have received from all corners of the globe from our friends and the wider community."
The Cannons also praised the emergency services crew who attended the incident and the medical staff at the hospital.
Five years ago another former Wallaby hooker, Phil Kearns also accidentally ran over his daughter Andie in the driveway.
Andie has since made a full recovery even though at the time she suffered internal injuries.
